The Dresden Files Book 6 : Blood Rites by Jim Butcher

The Dresden Files Book 6 : Blood Rites

The Dresden Files Book 6 : Blood Rites Overview

Per usual, wizard-detective extraordinaire Harry Dresden is in trouble. He barely escapes an assassination attempt, courtesy of the Black Council of vampires, when Thomas, a vampire who has helped Harry out on occasion, asks him to take a case. It seems someone doesn't want porno film director Arturo Genosa's latest effort to get off the ground. An entropy spell has killed two of Arturo's assistants, and Thomas wants Harry to find the culprit. With suspects abounding--Arturo has no fewer than three ex-wives--Harry decides to pose as a production assistant at the studio. Though he isn't able to stop another sabotage attempt, this one threatening an actress' life, he does save the young woman. With danger closing in, the last thing Harry needs is a sexy succubus and a surprising revelation about his heritage. Filled with sizzling magic and intrigue as well as important developments for Harry, the latest of his adventures will have fans rapidly turning the pages.

The Dresden Files Book 6 : Blood Rites Review

Lol, this was an excellent addition to the series. Dresden is asked by Thomas Raith, a White Court Vampire to take a case helping a Porn movie producer whose cast and crew are being killed by crazy random events. What ensues is a fun, fast paced romp wherein Harry tries to protect them while finding out who is behind the mayhem. Along the way, Harry gets to deal with some more fallout from his slaying of Bianca, and also finds out quite a bit more about his mother and his background. This is a really great book, and if possible, even a bit darker than the previous books, while still retaining that sarcastic humor we all know and love. Enjoy!

Review of The Dresden Files Book 5 : Death Masks

Review Great Fantasy Books

The Dresden Files Book 5 : Death Masks by Jim Butcher

The Dresden Files Book 5 : Death Masks

The Dresden Files Book 5 : Death Masks Overview

Harry Dresden is not having a good day. A vampire named Ortega is hunting the beleaguered wizard, intending to challenge him to a duel that, Ortega claims, will end the war between the vampires and the wizards. Harry has almost no hope of winning the duel, but soon he is preoccupied by another problem: Father Vincent, a priest, needs Harry's help in finding the Shroud of Turin, stolen by a trio of thieves. Harry traces two of the thieves to his hometown, Chicago, but when he finds them, he learns that he isn't the only one after them. A group of terrifying demons wants the shroud, and its leader is interested in Harry's soul, too. Harry must call on all of his friends, including three brave knights, his police-officer friend, and even his half-vampire ex-girlfriend, Susan. Butcher maintains a breakneck pace in Harry's exciting fifth adventure. This imaginative series continues to surprise and delight with its inventiveness and sympathetic hero. Kristine Huntley

The Dresden Files Book 5 : Death Masks Review

Really, there is a certain pattern to the Dresden books....namely, Harry gets his butt handed to him repeatedly, generally almost dying each time, only to come back a little angrier, and end up, if not on top, at least alive and ready for the next calamity to befall him, lol.

This time, a vampire challenges him to a duel, which he is obligated to accept, and at the same time, he is hired by a Vatican priest to find the stolen Shroud of Turin...and basically, that's all i can tell you, except that Susan Rodriguez comes back in this book, and the ride is as crazy, death and explosion and magic and double cross and intrigue filled as all the previous Dresden books.

A very quick read (i read it in about two hours), and enjoyable from start to finish. Timewise, I'm a little behind in the series, as i am only now beginning book 6, but i am catching up quickly. :)

The Dresden Files Book 4 : Summer Knight Overview

"Fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Tanya Huff will love this series."
-Midwest Book Review

"What would you get if you crossed Spenser with Merlin? Probably you would come up with someone very like Harry Dresden."

The Dresden Files Book 4 : Summer Knight Review

In classic Dresden fashion, Harry gets beaten to a pulp repeatedly, fights several battles almost simultaneously, faces death at every turn....

In this book, Harry is basically trying to find out who killed the Summer Knight. The twists and turns are the hallmark of any Butcher novel, and this one doesnt disappoint. When you finish this book, you feel like you have just desperately crawled through horrible battles with even more horrible fiends along with Harry. I wont ruin it for you buy describing much else, but if you have been reading this series up to now, you have a good idea what style of writing to expect. Read this one and.....enjoy! I did.

Review of The Dresden Files Book 3 : Grave Peril

Review Great Fantasy Books

The Dresden Files Book 3 : Grave Peril by Jim Butcher

The Dresden Files Book 3 : Grave Peril

The Dresden Files Book 3 : Grave Peril Overview

Wizard Harry Dresden stars in the third installment of the Dresden Files (following Fool Moon), a haunting, fantastical novel that begins almost as innocently as those of another famous literary wizard named Harry. In the opening scene, Dresden and his knight friend, Michael, battle the ghost of a woman who is terrorizing a local hospital's maternity ward. From there, the novel quickly evolves into an unorthodox tale spiced with sexual innuendo and subtle humor (Dresden carries his ghost-hunting gear in an old Scooby-Doo lunch box). Due to the weakened barrier between the spirit world which Butcher refers to as "the nevernever" and the actual world, obsessive and violent ghosts are on the loose in modern-day Chicago, and they seem to be targeting Dresden and Michael. Horny vampires and possessive demons join the mix as Dresden journeys into the spirit world to hunt down the villains who are terrorizing him and his friends. Butcher narrates Dresden's story in the first person, which limits the amount of detail he can inject into the lives of his secondary characters. Despite this narrow point of view, Butcher successfully lends human dimensions to vampires and spirits through his vivid descriptions and colloquial dialogue. (Sept.)Forecast: A vivid cover showing glowing barbed wire wrapped around a pair of cemetery gates is misleading as is a cover quote appealing to fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Tanya Huff but it will catch the browser's eye. This over-the-top tale is more likely to entertain young adult readers than fans of the aforementioned authors.

The Dresden Files Book 3 : Grave Peril Review

Are you a fan of Jim Butcher's series "The Dresden Files" , Can't help but love the annoying Wizard Harry Dresden and cringe at the amount of trouble he always seems to attract ? Reading my way through the series , it's very rare that Harry doesn't seem to get a job which finds him in real big trouble with either the police or the council of Nevernever world. In Grave Peril , we discover that something evil is going down and it's up to Harry and his friend Michael - who is a Knights Templer - one of God's Knights and a true God-fearing man to save the city of Chicago and those whom they love. It is known as Bob the Skull kindly cares to share with us as "The Nightmare" it's a spirit that can get into people and tear them to shreds inside , it's like having a barbed wire slice through your body and once it does this , it can posess a bit of that person and when Harry is caught by the Nightmare - it starts to imitate Harry hurting his closest and dearest friends. Can Harry and Michael work together to discover the source of the Nightmare and Kill it , or will it hit the pair close to home as it captures Detective Murph and Michael's wife Charity. We see the re-introduction and more focused in this novel - the Vampire Courts and Bianca , how are they working with the Nightmare, what deal has Bianca struck ? When Harry's kind-of Girlfriend reporter Susan finds herself stuck in the middle of things , Harry calls upon the help of his Fairy Godmother Lea and what will Susan have to lose to save herself and Harry ? Will it be worth it or has Harry lost Susan forever ?

Try it, you'll like it. An exciting debut novel suggesting there are wizards and witches among us... wish I'd thought of it myself. -- Glen Cook, author of Faded Steel Hat

The Dresden Files Book 2 : Fool Moon Review

Harry Dresden, wizard and private investigator, is back and this problem is a doozy. Wolves are killing people every full moon, and the police want to question Harry. If that's not enough, the FBI is pushing their weight around and mobsters are leaning on Harry.

"Full Moon" keeps us bouncing along with a mix of humour and suspense. It's very well plotted with fun characters and wild story lines. For what it tries to do, it succeeds marvelously. After having such a good time with the first two books in the series, I'm keenly looking forward to all the rest. Keep Butcher high on your reading list.

Review of The Dresden Files Book 1 : Storm Front

Review Great Fantasy Books

The Dresden Files Book 1 : Storm Front by Jim Butcher

The Dresden Files Book 1 : Storm Front

The Dresden Files Book 1 : Storm Front Overview

As in the audio adaptation of Butcher's first Dresden Files novel, Storm Front, Marsters (who played Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer) slips easily into the role of down-on-his-luck wizard Harry Dresden. Marsters's self-deprecating tone fits the character perfectly; he reads with a dry, ironic humor that doesn't mask Harry's genuine concern for the lives of innocents. Marsters also displays a remarkable skill for lending even the strangest characters and creatures voices-including gentleman gangster Johnny Marconi, his henchmen, a sexy female werewolf and Bob, the British-accented talking skull. In this outing, Harry is again out of cash, and police detective Karrin Murphy, who's still angry at him over the events of the first book, isn't inclined to throw work his way. But soon a series of mysterious, violent murders sends her to Harry for help. Are the killings the work of a local motorcycle gang? Or a werewolf-and if so, which werewolf? Mac Finn, the werewolf environmentalist? The group of idealistic college kids who voluntarily become werewolves by night? Or the trigger-happy group of FBI agents turned werewolf vigilantes? Though the price of this audio package may put off some listeners, Marsters's lively telling makes it worth every penny.

The Dresden Files Book 1 : Storm Front Review

I'm not exactly overwhelmed, but it was a very entertaining book. Harry Dresden is a likable character, and he's not a fancy wizard, he's more a blue-collar worker of magic. He leads a very ordinary life, struggling to make enough to pay the rent. He is a regular guy, I think he has some problems dealing with women, since his remarks are a little bit on the chauvinist side, but at the same time it seems women are his stronger allies.

In the world of magic, he is a sort of disgraced figure. As the story progresses, we realize how powerful he is and we gather bits of information about his past, which remains mysterious until the end of the book. There is little that Harry reveals about his past, but I was very moved when he recalled his father, what a nice and good man he was. There was a lot of affection, a little less humor, and in that moment I really began to like Harry and want to know more about him.

As I said before, the book is very enjoyable, there were a few moments when I thought the author was trying to hard to seem funny, but overall it's a good first book, with great action, no dull moment and no (or minimal) info dumping, for which I am always grateful.

Review of Frontier Magic Book 2 Across the Great Barrier

Review Great Fantasy Books

Frontier Magic Book 2 Across the Great Barrier by Patricia C. Wrede

Frontier Magic Book 2 Across the Great Barrier

Frontier Magic Book 2 Across the Great Barrier Overview

From New York Times #1 bestselling author Patricia C. Wrede, the second in the series of magic on the western frontier.

Eff is an unlucky thirteenth child - her twin brother, Lan, is a powerful seventh son of a seventh son. And yet, Eff is the one who saved the day for the settlements west of the Great Barrier. Her unique ways of doing magic and seeing the world, and her fascination with the magical creatures and land in the Great Plains push Eff to work toward joining an expedition heading west. But things are changing on the frontier.

There are new professors of magic for Eff and Lan to learn to work with. There's tension between William and his father. And there are new threats on the frontier and at home. To help, Eff must travel beyond the Barrier, and come to terms with her magical abilities--and those of her brother, to stop the newest threat encroaching on the settlers.

With wit, magic, and a touch of good pioneer sense, Patricia C. Wrede weaves a fantastic tale of the very wild west.

Frontier Magic Book 2 Across the Great Barrier Review

Patricia C. Wrede's ACROSS THE GREAT BARRIER tells of Eff, who could be a powerful magician but who finds herself out west, away from the frontier city she's always known. Everyone expects her to be amazing, so when she's asked to travel past the Barrier Spell with one of the new professors at her father's school, new possibilities arise. This is a sequel to THIRTEENTH CHILD but stands well on its own for newcomers to Eff's story.

Review of Frontier Magic Book 1 Thirteenth Child

Review Great Fantasy Books

Frontier Magic Book 1 Thirteenth Child by Patricia C. Wrede

Frontier Magic Book 1 Thirteenth Child

Frontier Magic Book 1 Thirteenth Child Overview

Eff was born a thirteenth child. Her twin brother, Lan, is the seventh son of a seventh son. This means he's supposed to possess amazing talent -- and she's supposed to bring only bad things to her family and her town. Undeterred, her family moves to the frontier, where her father will be a professor of magic at a school perilously close to the magical divide that separates settlers from the beasts of the wild.

With wit and wonder, Patricia Wrede creates an alternate history of westward expansion that will delight fans of both J. K. Rowling and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Frontier Magic Book 1 Thirteenth Child Review

This is a first person coming of age story told by Eff who happens to be a twin and a thirteenth child in an alternate Earth setting in the pioneer days. Settlers have more to worry about than our early settlers had though. This world has magic and dangerous magical creatures like steam dragons, spectral bears, mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses among other dangers.

The world also has three kinds of magic - the Avrupan, the Hijero-Cathayan, and the Aphrikan. Many, even most. of the people in Columbia are students of the Avrupan school which teaches that seventh sons are lucky and seventh sons of seventh sons are even luckier. And there is nothing worse to be than a thirteenth child. Her brother Lan is a double seven who is petted and praised for his potential; Eff is the unlucky thirteenth. While her parents are supportive of her, many of her aunts, uncles and cousins torment and belittle her. She develops a major inferiority complex and a fear that she really will turn out to be as horrible as her relatives say.

When she is five, her parents decide to travel west to the edge of settlement. Her father is a professor of magic who gets a job at one of the new land grant colleges on the frontier. This trip gives Eff a chance to start over but she still doesn't tell anyone that she is a thirteenth child. There in Mill City Eff also has the chance to learn from a new teacher who is an expert in the Aphrikan school of magic. The new teacher helps Eff gain confidence but Eff is still worried that her magic could be dangerous.

Now, in this world there is a magical barrier that was erected by Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson to keep the people to the east safe from all the dangerous magical and non-magical creatures in the west. But settlers are pushing the limit and gradually expanding beyond this great Barrier Spell. Each settlement has their own magician to provide the magical protections necessary to live beyond the Great Barrier. But the land beyond the Barrier is little explored and largely unknown. Eff wants to learn more about the land and become a naturalist. When the settlements are attacked by a new insect that no one knew anything about, Eff travels with her father, twin, and friend to try to find a way to protect the settlements. And she becomes a heroine!

I thought the story was a fascinating and different take on fantasy. Combining magic with pioneering made it even more interesting. Having Eff tell her own story made it easy to understand and sympathize with her. The only problem I had with the story was the very lackluster cover that the book has. If I can convince students to pick it up, I know that they will enjoy getting to know Eff and finding out about her magical world. But the cover doesn't make it easy.

Don't judge this book by its cover! Pick it up and explore a fascinating new world with a wonderful main character.

Review of A Matter of Magic by Patricia Wrede

Review Great Fantasy Books

A Matter of Magic by Patricia Wrede

The Book of Deacon by Joseph Lallo

A Matter of Magic by Patricia Wrede Overview

When a stranger offers her a small fortune to break into a traveling magician's wagon, Kim doesn't hesitate. Having grown up a waif in the dirty streets of London, Kim isn't above a bit of breaking-and-entering. A hard life and lean times have schooled her in one lesson: steal from them before they steal from you. But when the magician catches her in the act, Kim thinks she's done for. Until he suggests she become his apprentice; then the real trouble begins.

Kim soon finds herself entangled with murderers, thieves, and cloak-and-dagger politics, all while trying to learn how to become both a proper lady and a magician in her own right. Magic and intrigue go hand in hand in Mairelon the Magician and The Magician's Ward, two fast-paced novels filled with mystery and romance, set against the intricate backdrop of Regency England.

A Matter of Magic by Patricia Wrede Review

Buy the book, it's excellent.

"A Matter of Magic" is a collection of two novels featuring the street-wise young Kim, and the brilliant yet slightly eccentric magician, Mairelon. Both novels feature magic, mystery, a cast of interesting characters, and are written in an addictive telling that is hard to put away. It's well written, has a plot that keeps you guessing and being a collection of two novels in one book is a bargain! Buy the book. It's a good read and each story can stand on its own (but are much more enjoyable together).

In the first story, "Mairelon the Magician", Mairelon is framed for the theft of a set of magical artifacts and he goes undercover as a street performer in London. Kim, growing up on the streets soon stumbles into Mairelon's world on a "job" of hers. The two meet, and team up unraveling mystery and adventure together, hoping to clear Mairelon's name in the end.

In the second story, "The Magician's Ward" the two return to London. Kim has begun lessons in magic (with Mairelon as her teacher of course). Beginning to question her identity, her purpose, and even her relations with her teacher, Kim and Mairelon must solve yet a another series of magical, mystery thefts. All the while, Kim struggles with her formal introduction into society. Kim and Mairelon begin to drift ever so slightly apart. To make matters worse, Mairelon looses his magic abilities and his life faces a great danger that Kim must stop. The second book focuses more on trust, care, respect and love the two have for each other, making the dangers all the more real and serious.

There's magic, mystery, and there's that London Romanesque genre that gives the tales a little something extra. My one and ONLY complaint is that at the end of the second story, the ending seems to have been a little rushed (but rest assured, this doesn't happen until AFTER the mystery is explained so it's mainly the ending interaction between characters). But this is such a small nag of mine.

So again: Buy the book, it's excellent.

The Book of Deacon by Joseph Lallo

The Book of Deacon by Joseph Lallo

The Book of Deacon by Joseph Lallo Overview

Myranda is a young woman more interested in staying alive than being a hero. Orphaned by a continent-spanning war that has gone on for decades too long and shunned for failing to support it, she has been on the move since she was only a child. One can hardly blame her when she thinks that the chance discovery of a fallen soldier's priceless cargo is the moment that will change her life. No one could predict just how great that change would be. It will lead her through an adventure of rebels and generals, of wizards and warriors, and of beasts both noble and monstrous. Each step of the way will take her closer to the truth of her potential, of the war, and of the fate of her world.

The Book of Deacon by Joseph Lallo Review

Full of adventure and magic, wizards, warriors and the occasional dragon, this book is far from perfectly written, (and it certainly isn't going to be the next Lord of the Rings) but I couldn't help but give it five stars; I just couldn't stop reading it. Why I couldn't stop reading it is a bit of a mystery because it's not a terribly deep book, not the kind that makes you really think and keeps you up at night, but just a pleasure to read.

There are page breaks but there are no chapters in this book. Instead of making it drag on like one might expect I feel like it might actually make the book read faster because there isn't really a place for your brain to stop and disengage. The very very last bit of the book will probably explain to readers why there are no chapters, but it's a fun little addition so I don't want to spoil it.

I guess this review isn't exactly screaming "must-read!" but I suggest anyone interested in a quick adventure/fantasy read give this book a try. The plot is fairly simple but sometimes it's just nice to not have to think so much.

This was a free kindle download when I got it, and I will probably eventually be purchasing the rest of the series.

Haven Series Book 6 : Death Magic Overview

The Black Jewel awakens in DEATH MAGIC, book six of the series. Known as the Primal Jewels, the Black, the Quicksilver and the Sunstone have long been lost. This is the story of their return to the lands of Cymru.

Many old evils stir. Four score marriages between the Fae and the River Folk result in interesting offspring that have not been seen for centuries. King Arawn of the Dead schemes to raise an army to invade the River Haven. The Kindred face a mysterious plague, Myrrdin is nowhere to be found and Oberon is up to something….

Brand struggles to deal with the tricks of the Fae, the retreat of the Kindred and the rise of the Dead in DEATH MAGIC, the sixth book in this epic series of fantasy novels by bestselling author B. V. Larson.

Haven Series Book 6 : Death Magic Review

The sixth installment in the Haven series was quite interesting. The story was a very good read and I found that I was unable to put down my Kindle towards the end. There was a very anticlimatic portion within the story and lovable character was killed off, but overall I really liked the book and the series. I am hoping for at least three more books to follow the last three gems of power.

Haven Series Book 5 : Blood Magic Overview

The Red Jewel is rediscovered and wielded in this, Book #5 of the series. Blood Magic reigns supreme, but who will master the Red Jewel first? The elder races gather, unhappy with the upstart humans and their possession of powerful Jewels. Brand leads an army of the River Folk and the Wee Folk to the Black Mountains to answer the request of the Kindred for aid. Enemy hosts march to face him. Fantastic forces are unleashed upon the world in a new war that will not be soon forgotten.

Blood Magic is the fifth book in this epic series of fantasy novels by B. V. Larson. At 81,000 words the fifth book is the longest of the series.

Haven Series Book 5 : Blood Magic Review

Each book in the Haven series is short, so I read the books back to back in order to make one big fantasy book. Because of this, I am rating the whole series as if it was one book. The Haven series is a great read, and a worthy addition to my Kindle library! Fans of the Fantasy genre will love it, as it includes all the things a fantasy fan craves, without becoming stale and predictable. The many races I have come to know and adore/loathe as this 'book' developed are the Riverfolk, Wee folk, Fae, Kindred, Gnomes, Kobolds, Goblins, Merlings, and the Dead. Though the races are many and varied, the plot never becomes too confusing, and I was always able to keep track of what was going on without difficulty. The author manages to make each race separate and best of all, intriguing. My favorite part of the series was the idea of the jewels of power, and seeing how each jewel worked, and what they could do. It was interesting to see how each race was affected by who had which jewel, and to see all the consequences. There was great character development and great race development throughout the series. I enjoyed the characters immensely, though they all have their flaws. There is one thing that I noticed throughout the series, and that was sub par editing (that being said...sorry for any grammar mistakes I've made in this review!). It DID NOT detract from the story in any way, though, so it didn't bother me. I can't wait to read what is next by this author.

I definitely recommend this book! Happy Reading!!

Haven Series Book 2 : Sky Magic

Haven Series Book 2 : Sky Magic Overview

In Sky Magic, the second book of the Haven Series, the Pact that has kept the peace for centuries between humanity and the Faerie is broken. Oberon, King of the Faerie, lost his Blue Jewel and can no longer command the marching Rainbow to keep the peace. Once again the darkest and most evil of his kind plague human lands. In defense of the Haven, a champion must be chosen to wield the Axe Ambros. A magical weapon powered by the legendary Amber Jewel, the eye of a long dead golden dragon, the Axe is difficult to master.

Written for a fast-paced read, Sky Magic is a little longer than Amber Magic.

Haven Series Book 1 : Amber Magic Overview

The humans have no magic and are hunted for sport, but that is about to change. War is coming....

The Sun Dragon spawned nine lesser dragons which devoured their parent for the power the elder possessed. These young dragons fought for choice bits of the Sun Dragon, but each only managed to eat a portion, thus giving them specific powers. Over time, these foul dragons were hunted down and slain by heroes of old. When each body rotted away, nothing remained save for nine Jewels--each the lens of a dragon's left eye. These Nine Eyes, or Jewels, form the basis for all magic in the world.

The Haven Series is a fantasy epic about the Nine Jewels of Power, each of which represents a different form of magic. The Red Jewel, known as Sang, gives the wielder power over Blood Magic. The Blue, named Lavatis, can call the Rainbow and rules the Sky.

Amber Magic is a short introductory book in this epic series of fantasy novels by bestselling author B. V. Larson.

Haven Series Book 1 : Amber Magic Review

OK, I've actually read this entire series... ;) Not just this one book. But I figure a review on the first is a good place to start.

This is not earth-shattering, life-changing fiction.

It IS a very good, fun read that will give you hours of enjoyment. I quite literally snagged each sequel on my Kindle as soon as I finished the last, burning my way through the series. The world is interesting; the characters intriguing and growing moreso as the series continues. I'm very much looking forward to the next installment.

What starts off sounding like "just another epic fantasy farmboy story" has a great deal more depth and background than that. Give it a shot - if you enjoy epic fantasy series, I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Magic Graves by Ilona Andrews, Jeaniene Frost Overview

New York Times bestselling authors Jeaniene Frost and Ilona Andrews bring you two short stories of paranormal.

Jeaniene Frost's story, One for the Money, features vampires Cat and Bones trying to protect a spoiled heiress with a price on her head and an undead hitman on her trail. Previously published in Death's Excellent Vacation. Also includes the first three chapters from Jeaniene's story in The Bite Before Christmas anthology, as well as a sneak peek at ONCE BURNED, the first novel in the new Night Prince series.

Ilona Andrews' story, A Questionable Client, is a prequel to her award-winning Kate Daniels series. In a world beset by magic waves, Kate Daniels works as a mercenary. She is tired, hungry, and there is foul-smelling blood on her boots. All she wants to do is to go home, but when Mercenary Guild offers her a job she can't refuse, she finds herself protecting a man against Russian wizards. Previously published in Dark and Stormy Knights. Also includes first two chapters of FATE'S EDGE, book 3 in the Edge series, and first two chapters of Magic Grieves, a Kate Daniels novella.

Magic Graves by Ilona Andrews, Jeaniene Frost Review

I purchased "Magic Graves" for the Ilona Andrews story "A Questionable Client" about Kate Daniels' first meeting with Saiman. This was a good read, and helped to explain Kate and Saiman's rather complicated relationship in the Kate Daniels Magic series.

If you are unfamiliar with the Kate Daniels Magic series, then this is the perfect book to check it out because "A Questionable Client" is a prequel. It is a captivating series written by a husband & wife team about Kate Daniels, a mercenary who helps to clean up messes caused by magic in a post-apocalyptic Atlanta. Kate is tough as nails with a sarcastic streak, but vulnerable as well. She fights monsters with her trusty magic sword and tries to keep a low profile because of her heritage - if it comes out who she is, people will want to kill her. Kate is slow to trust people, but throughout the series she begins to form relationships with others, including Curran, the Beast Lord, who is the leader of the Pack of shape shifters. All characters are well written, unique and authentic, even small supporting characters. The world building is absolutely incredible to the point that one could think it is completely real and that the authors are just really good at describing it. It's a vivid, interesting, detailed, authentic world that is completely captivating. Worth reading and re-reading.

I also greatly enjoyed Jeaniene Frost's story, "One for the Money." In this interesting and fun story, vampires Cat and Bones are protecting a spoiled rich kid who is being chased down by an undead creature who is trying to kill her. The dynamics in Cat & Bones relationship make me want to read more of their back story.

Finally, there are a number of samples in this compilation, which kept me busy adding to my TBR list. Good value all around, but especially for anyone interested in paranormal or urban fantasy.
